Club career

Manchester City

Not joining Manchester United , Westwood began his career at Manchester City . After moving to the main team, he did not become their main goalkeeper, because in those years the legendary David James defended the gates of Manchester City. While renting at Bradford City and Accrington Stanley , Westwood stood poorly at the goal and even considered leaving football and starting a police officer career.

Carlisle United

Westwood moved to Carlisle United , becoming Matt Glennon's understudy and replacing him during Glennon's treatment. In the 2005/06 season, Glennon left the team, but Westwood did not become the main goalkeeper, as the first number went to Anthony Willimas. Nevertheless, Westwood won the fight for a place in the gate, becoming the main goalkeeper of the club. He spent 35 games in the Second League , and at the end of the 2007/08 season in the First League he even got into the PFA team of the year .

Coventry City

On June 18, 2008, Westwood signed a 3-year contract with the club from Coventry City Championship , having joined the PFA team of the year in 2009 after the first season. In the 2009/10 season, he received the award of the club’s best player, after which he did not miss a single ball in all the matches in which he played.

Sunderland

On June 22, 2011, Sunderland confirmed that Westwood would join Sunderland on July 1 as a free agent. His team lost the first game to Brighton in the Football League Cup . His first appearance in the Premier League was in a match against Aston Villa : Westwood later argued with former teammate Darren Bent about a one-on-one missed goal. In the next game with Manchester United , Westwood scored a magnificent double save after hitting Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra , but United won with a score of 1-0. Despite the Sunderland games, which fought for points, and Steve Bruce’s dismissal, Westwood was still in good shape. However, after losing Sunderland to Manchester City , Westwood became the second goalkeeper after Minolet.

National Career

On May 17, 2008, Westwood was called up to the Irish national team to visit a training camp in Portugal after impressing the national team in the match against Leeds United in the Championship match. Three days later, he made his debut in a match against the Portuguese club Lagos, replacing Joe Murphy in the 66th minute of the match. May 29, 2009 Westwood first appeared on the field in the form of the national team in a friendly match against Nigeria . He also played in a friendly match with South Africa at Tomond Park Stadium on September 8, 2009. March 26, 2011 Westwood made his debut in the European Championship match against Macedonia . He made brilliant saves in the final minutes of the match.
