History
UO "Vitebsk Order" Badge of Honor "State Academy of Veterinary Medicine" (VGAVM) until October 1, 1994 was known as the Vitebsk Order " Badge of Honor " Veterinary Institute named after the October Revolution .
In 1996 , 2 specializations were introduced at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine: in veterinary and sanitary examination and in toxicology, in 1997 - in veterinary bacteriology , and in 1998 - in veterinary gynecology and reproduction biotechnology, since 2001 - in diseases of birds , fish and bees .
During its existence (1924–2011), the university trained over 30 thousand specialists [4] .
Structure
It consists of: 5 faculties, 28 departments, an agricultural college, branches in the cities. Rechitsa and Pinsk , Research Institute of Applied Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology , Republican Laboratory of Information Technologies. Today, the Academy employs 171 candidates , 23 doctors of sciences .
Faculties
The Academy currently has 5 faculties [5] :
- Veterinary medicine [6] - is a leading division of the Academy. It consists of 18 departments, 7 clinics, a vivarium , a veterinary clinic. The educational process is also provided by 10 departments of the biotechnological faculty. The primary clinical preparation of students is carried out in practical classes using 650-700 sick animals in clinics for the academic year, taken for inpatient treatment and 1500-1800 for outpatient treatment.
- Biotechnological [7] - the faculty has been functioning since 1933. Its main production base is basic farms, pedigree enterprises of the region, livestock complexes. The main structural units of the faculty are 10 departments. Since 1996, a specialization in breeding has been opened at the faculty. In 2008, two new specialties were introduced: veterinary sanitary examination and veterinary pharmacy .
- Distance learning [8] - was opened in 1959 and included 2 departments: veterinary and zooengineering . During this time, more than 6,000 specialists with higher education were trained, including more than 3,500 veterinarians and more than 2,000 zoo engineers. In 1994, by decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus, part-time education in the specialty “Veterinary Medicine” was closed , and since 1998 it was reopened .
- Further education [9] - created in 1966 . Its main task is to improve the skills and retraining of veterinary and zootechnical specialists. Curricula contain the latest achievements of veterinary and zootechnical science, which makes it possible to direct the educational process to the study of optimal options for the production of livestock products.

Scientific and educational activities
Currently, the Academy employs 355 teachers , including 190 candidates and 26 doctors of sciences . In total, over 5,500 students study at the academy in full-time and part-time forms. At the faculty of advanced training and retraining of specialists, specialists in the agricultural sector are raising their professional level, as well as undergoing professional retraining in 9 specialties of the veterinary profile.
Achievements
Over the past three years, academy scientists have created 140 veterinary drugs, developed more than 150 recommendations and instructions, received more than 30 patents , defended 28 theses , of which 1 is a doctoral . The Academy annually publishes over 140 titles of printed materials in significant editions - textbooks, teaching aids, monographs and reference books.
