Initially, hunters and fur traders called the Beaver River because of the abundance of beavers in these places before they were almost completely destroyed by the Hudson's Bay Company at the beginning of the 19th century [2] . In 1850, during the California Gold Rush , a gold digger named John Scott found gold in the lower reaches of the river. These attracted a large number of prospectors to the area; Scott's discovery gave the name to the local valley, and the river was also named after it.
