It originates on the western slope of the American Continental Divide , in McKinley County, New Mexico. In the upper course it flows first to the north and then to the west, flowing through a barren desert valley with rocky and stony slopes. Further flows mainly in the south-west direction. Falls in Little Colorado near the town of Holbrook, Arizona. The mouth height is 1555 [2] m above sea level.
Puerco tested one of the largest radioactive leaks in US history. On July 16, 1979, about 380,000 m³ of radioactive water containing uranium fell into the headwaters of the river from storage facilities at a uranium mine. About 1000 tons of uranium waste polluted an area of 100 hectares and a section of a river 80 km long [3] [4] .
