History
Staro-Syassky Canal - Empress Catherine II Channel
- They planned to build the canal under Peter the Great as part of the Tikhvin water system . In 1724, the first field studies were conducted. In 1724, the Senate presented a report addressed to the emperor, where he asked for permission to begin construction of the Syassky Canal outside the framework of the Tikhvin system. According to the plan, the canal was supposed to be 28 meters wide and 2.1 meters deep. First of all, it was necessary for the delivery to the northern capital of wood, lime and stone slabs harvested in Sashi.
- The Senate approved the proposals, but work begun in 1765 due to lack of funding was stopped. Their small volume was fought from 1774 to 1783. The construction was fully completed in 1802 in connection with the construction of the Mariinsky Water System . On June 1, ship traffic was opened. Thus, a canal 10 kilometers long without locks and dams was built 36 years.
