Biography

Born in the family of electrician worker Boris Ivanovich Baranov and employee of the factory Lyudmila Veniaminovna (nee Kogan). Father had a beautiful voice, was a soloist of an amateur choir, his sisters had a musical education and worked as musical educators.

He graduated from high school with a silver medal (1952). In the same year, he graduated from the first year of the College of Music at the Moscow State Conservatory. P.I. Tchaikovsky in the violin class of Professor Yu. I. Yankelevich . As part of the string quartet of Moscow State University, he received a silver medal from the laureate of the International Festival of Youth and Students in the section "Chamber Ensembles" (Moscow, 1957).

He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University (1957). Pupil G.I. Petrova . He entered graduate school (1957), but due to family circumstances he transferred to extramural studies and since 1958 began working at the NII-1 (now the Center for Scientific Research named after M.V. Keldysh ). Senior engineer, senior researcher (1958-1966). Candidate of Sciences (1962), thesis: "On the equations of magnetic hydrodynamics for a fully ionized gas and some problems associated with the anisotropy of transport properties." [one]

Since 1966, he worked at the Space Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (IKKI), senior researcher, head of the laboratory (1986).

Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences (1970), thesis: "Hydrodynamic flows of anisotropic plasma." [2]

Since 1987 - at the Institute of Mechanics Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , head. Laboratory of Physical Gas Dynamics, since 2007 - Chief Researcher.

Scientific Interests

Hydroaeromechanics, magnetic hydrodynamics, plasma physics, space gas dynamics. The main works are devoted to hydrodynamic plasma flows in strong magnetic fields that violate the isotropy of transport properties, the fundamental problems of substantiating hydrodynamic equations for plasma, creating a model for the interaction of interplanetary and interstellar media, and creating other hydrodynamic models of physical phenomena encountered in space conditions.

Interesting Scientific Result

The intersection of the Voyager-1 and Voyager-2 American spacecraft with the shock wave of solar wind deceleration in December 2004 and in September 2007 at a distance of 84 a from the Sun. e. and 94 a. e. accordingly (1 a.u. - distance from the Earth to the Sun). To within a few percent, this distance was predicted in the mathematical model proposed by V. B. Baranov (et al.) For the interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar medium surrounding the solar system almost 25 years before these intersections.

Author and co-author of more than 100 scientific papers.

Teaching activities

Since 1966 he has been teaching at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University , associate professor, professor (1976) in the Department of Aeromechanics and Gas Dynamics concurrently. He reads special courses: “Hydroaeromechanics”, “Introduction to Magnetic Hydrodynamics”, “Introduction to the Kinetic Theory of Gases”, “Space Gas Dynamics”. He leads special seminars on aeromechanics and gas dynamics. He prepared 16 candidates of sciences, of which 5 became doctors of sciences.
