The group begins with a friendship between mountain bikers Jason Newstead and bike shop owner Joe Ledesma. The group was named based on the hobbies of these two friends. At the start of the project, Newstead played the drums, while Michigan-born Stephen Wiig played the guitar. Then Newstead took over the guitar and vocal duties, while Vig returned to the drum kit.
The band recorded every session at Newsted’s home studio in Chophouse and played several shows in the Bay Area, from their neighbor’s open-air barbecue to local legendary San Francisco rock clubs.
The group was inoperative due to Newsted's injuries, but was revived in August 2011 after Newsted and Wiig simultaneously watched the episode with Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations featuring Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age and Desert Sessions founder Josh Homme, who inspired the resurrection of the Papa Wheelie, and as a result, the group gave several local shows in the Bay Area - including the opening of Anvil at The Red Devil Lounge and Kyuss Lives in San Francisco on November 19, 2011 with The Sword & Black Cobra.
