Biography

On February 18, 1902, Bishop Jonah of Kaluga-Smolensk was ordained to the Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Pursovka, Maloyaroslavetsky Uyezd.

In 1911 or 1912 he was transferred to Maloyaroslavets , where he lived in his own house on Malyginskaya Street. In 1913 he was transferred to Kaluga , to the Old Believer Church of the Nativity of Christ, which is located in the Tanneries of Sloboda. It was elevated to the archpriest .

In the mid-1920s, he again served in Maloyaroslavets. According to the documents of 1924 in the family of Archpriest Simeon there were four children.

The 1926 Cathedral was approved as a candidate for bishop. The monastic tonsure was accepted with the name of Sergius.

November 1 (old style) in 1926 by Archbishop Meletius, Bishops Alexander (Bogatenkov) , Gerontius (Lakomkin) and Savoy (Ananyev) was consecrated bishop of Ural and Orenburg. Then, in November, he arrived in the diocese and soon visited all its parishes.

In 1927, underwent house arrest .

At the Consecrated Council in 1928, he made a report in which, talking about the next trip to the diocese, he substantiated the need for Old Believers' periodicals: “My whole detour through the diocese of the upper line from Uralsk and beyond Orenburg, this year, lasted at least 3 months in view of the difficulties movement: all the time by horse-drawn transport, and range distances ... In all the parishes I visit, people pay special attention to visiting their parish as their archpastor. Evasion of unbelief is not observed, with the exception of individual cases, which are expressed either in the non-attendance of the temple, or in a passive attitude to the faith of their ancestors ... The people cannot understand the issues that they have to face in modern atheistic literature, and because of this they arise those or other (as it were) doubts. Our pastors, and indeed all of us, especially now, need our Old Believers' periodical literature, where they could turn to for the resolution of necessary issues ... ”(Archives of the Metropolitanate of the Russian Orthodox Church Church. F. 1. Op. 3. Unit Chr. 292. L . one).

In 1930 or 1931, together with the priest of Uralsk and the church council, Bishop Sergius again underwent short-term prison arrest.

On August 8, 1934, he was arrested by the Ural OGPU and on November 9 of that year, the Supreme Court of the KSSR was sentenced to three years of exile (expulsion) on charges of counter-revolutionary agitation. After the trial, he lived in the city of Chimkent (Kazakhstan).

His photograph taken at the camp in 1936 has been preserved. On the back of this photo, someone’s hand made the inscription: "Remained unsold." The further fate is unknown. In 1990, he was posthumously rehabilitated for lack of corpus delicti.
