Together with the Golan Heights, the southern slopes of Hermon were captured by Israel from Syria during the Six Day War of 1967 and proclaimed sovereign Israeli territory in 1981 under the Golan Heights Act . The annexation was invalidated by UN Security Council Resolution No. 497 . The top of Al-Sheikh was captured by Israel during the war of 1973 and returned to Syria in 1974 as a result of the agreement on the division of forces.

Hermon in Religion
Hermon is mentioned in the Old Testament : “At that time we took from the hands of the two kings of the Amorites this land, which is on this side of the Jordan, from the stream of Arnon to Mount Hermon - the Sidonians Hermon are called Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir” ( Deut. 3 : 8-9 ). The Old Testament Apocryphal Book of Enoch says that the angels, who wished to enter the daughters of men, cemented their intentions on this mountain: “And they went down to Ardis, which is the summit of Mount Hermon; and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn on it and uttered another spell. ”( Book of Enoch 2: 1-6).
A number of modern theologians believe that Mount Hermon was a mountain of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ . For example, the author of the popular “Commentaries on the New Testament ”, William Barkley , has this opinion [5] .
