Biography
John Graham Mellor was born in Ankara to the family of Ronald Mellor, a British diplomat of Armenian and Jewish descent and a Scottish woman, Anna Mackenzie. By age, Joe Strummer was much older than the future punk generation [1] . He studied at a private closed school in London . In 1973, John Mellor, who then had the pseudonym Woody, joined the band The Vultures as a guitarist, drawing inspiration from early American rock and roll , blues , and British rock from the 1960s, but her activities were amateurish.
In the summer of 1974, Woody assembled The 101'ers with which he first performed at a concert in September of that year, and in the spring of 1975, Mellor changed his name to the pseudonym Joe Strummer . The 101'ers was a typical, low-profile pub-rock band playing primitive 1950s rock and rolls , rhythm and blues at taverns. In the end, a small independent label drew attention to the group, and in March 1976 the group's debut single, scheduled for the summer of that year , was recorded. However, the upcoming success was interrupted: when he saw the opening performances of The 101'ers members of Sex Pistols in April of that year, he noted that his group was “yesterday”. Interestingly, Joe learned to play the guitar quite late — at the age of 21. began to think about another musical direction, because there was an obvious difference between his group The 101'ers and Sex Pistols . Despite some social differences between Sex Pistols and himself (he grew up in the middle class and was much older than the generation of punks), Strummer took a lot from the group’s image. His stage image began to change. In late May, Strummer was made an offer to join a new group (future The Clash ), which he accepted. The 101'ers broke up and their first and last single came out after the breakup.
In The Clash, Strummer became the frontman, although he was far from the only author of texts and music. However, most of the vocal parts belong to him.
After the collapse of The Clash in 1986, Strummer took up a solo career. His last project was the group The Mescaleros , which lasted from 1999 to 2002.
Joe has two daughters from his girlfriend Gabi Salter: Jazz Domino Holly Mellor and Lola Mellor
Strummer died on December 22, 2002 from a congenital heart disease .
