The maximum body length is 234 cm, usually about 1 m, body weight reaches 5 kg [3] . Life expectancy is up to 15 years [4] .
The body is elongated, bare, silver (resembles a saber). The caudal fin is absent. The body ends with a filiform appendage. The dorsal fin is long, stretching from the head to the caudal stem. The prickly part, consisting of three rays, is not separated by a recess from the soft part with 130-135 soft rays.
It lives in the tropical and subtropical seas of all oceans. In Russia, it enters the waters of Southern Primorye . Bottom-pelagic fish, often found off the coast. At night, rises to the surface [5] .
Young and immature individuals feed on euphausids , pelagic crustaceans and small fish. Adults switch to feeding mainly on fish [5] .
Caviar and larvae are pelagic.
