About the album
The tapes were made by Adrian Barber, Star Club stage manager, at the request of Ted "Kingsize" Taylor , vocalist and guitarist of the Liverpool band "Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes", at that time also who worked in Hamburg, nicknamed the “King size” for his height of 6 feet 5 inches - about 195 cm). The recordings were made on a Grundig domestic reel tape recorder at a speed of 3 3/4 inches / sec (9.5 cm / sec) during three performances of 25, 28 (or 29) and December 30, 1962.
Although The Beatles thought the quality of the recording was too poor to try to release in any way, in the 1970s, the Lingasong Records label spent about $ 100,000 preparing it for the release of the album - resulting in the 1977 release of the Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962 .
The version released by Pickwick Records is slightly different from the Lingasong Records album - mostly more legible in vocals. In two tracks, “ Hallelujah, I Love Her So ” and “ Be-Bop-A-Lula ” The Beatles act as an accompanying band . The solo vocalists in these compositions are Horst Fasher, the manager and co-owner of the Star Club and his younger brother Fred Fascher, who worked at the club as a waiter. Another track on the album (not included in the album published by Lingasong in 1977) is not a recording of The Beatles' performance at all: “Hully Gully” is a recording of the performance of Cliff Bennett and the band Rebel Rousers (Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers), who performed on stage club that evening.
