The largest river originating in the ridge area is Santa Ana , which flows into the Pacific Ocean . Other significant rivers are the Whitewater , which flows from the mountains to the east through the valley of Coachella and flows into Lake Solton Sea , as well as the Mojave River, which flows to the northeast and is lost in the Mojave Desert . In the area of the San Bernardino mountain range there are such cities as Big Ber City, Crestline, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs.
As part of the Transverse Ridges, San Bernardino was formed during the tectonic movements between the North American and Pacific plates in the San Andreas fault zone [2] . Previously, it was believed that the ridge had risen in the Miocene , between 11 and 5 million years ago, but today this theory has been refuted. In its present form, San Bernardino rose in the early Pleistocene , about 2 million years ago; regional uplifts continue to the present.
