With his son Ivan, he developed a very complex relationship. Here is how Ivan himself spoke about this in his largely autobiographical novel “First Love” :

“My father had a strange influence - and it was a strange relationship. He hardly dealt with my upbringing, but he never insulted me; he respected my freedom - he was even, so to speak, polite to me ... but he didn’t allow me to reach him. I loved him, I admired him, he seemed to me a model of a man - and, my God, how passionately I would attach to him, if I did not constantly feel his deflecting hand! Sometimes, I’ll begin to examine his smart, beautiful, bright face ... my heart trembles, and my whole being rushes towards him ... he as if feels what is happening in me, pats me on the cheek in passing - and either leaves or does something, or all of a sudden it will freeze, as he alone knew how to freeze, and at once I will shrink and also become colder. "

In 1819, on October 20, he transferred from cavalry guards to the Yekaterinoslav cuirassier regiment with the rank of lieutenant colonel and was dismissed from service by the colonel on February 20, 1821.

Sergei Nikolaevich Turgenev was remarkable for his amazing beauty, according to some reviews there was a very kind person. But his portrait gives the impression of femininity and effeminacy, despite the dark and bold courageous eyes. The son called him “a great fisherman before the Lord of women's hearts” and portrayed him in “First Love” with perfect fullness as a brilliant man, until his mature years graceful and slender, who valued only freedom, will and power in life; these aspirations were easily satisfied, however, victories over women.

“A handsome man who corrected his affairs by marrying a wealthy heiress was a man indifferent to everything, including children. Having limited himself to the role of a purebred producer, he dutifully bowed his howl to his wife’s yoke. ” [1] .

He became the prototype of Pyotr Vasilyevich in Turgenev’s novel “First Love”, which describes his connection with Ekaterina Lvovna Shakhovskaya .

Sergei Nikolaevich died on October 30, 1834 in St. Petersburg after three days of torment from an attack of kidney-stone disease . At the same time, sons Ivan and Nikolai were present. [2]
