Biography
Tarlton Hoffman Bean was born into the family of George Bean and Mary Smith Bean on October 8, 1846 in . He went to a public school near Millersport, and after graduating in 1866, worked there as a teacher for several years. In 1874, he worked for the US Fisheries and Wildlife Services on the Connecticut Coast. In the same year, he began studying medicine at Columbia College, which he successfully completed in 1876. However, he did not work as a doctor. His passion was science.
In 1877, he received an assistant position in the ichthyology department of the Smithsonian Institution , and in 1879 he became the first curator of the fish department. In 1883, he graduated from Indiana University and received a master's degree in science. From 1895 to 1898, he led the aquarium in New York.
During his field studies for the US Fisheries and Wildlife Services, he discovered and described numerous new fish species. Together with his colleague George Brown Goode, he published several scientific papers, including Oceanic Ichthyology (1896).
Honors
Rosa and Karl Eigenman were named in honor of Tarleton Bean in 1890, the genus of fish of the Myctophidae family ( Myctophidae ) - Tarletonbeania .
