NTU (U.S. Navy Program)

DDG-42 "Manen", modernized under the NTU program in 1982

New Threat Upgrade ( Rus. Modernization in connection with a new threat, NTU ) is a modernization program aimed at improving the air defense system of ships with the Terrier and Tartar air defense systems.

The first modernization ship was the DDG-42 Mehan. Equipment was installed on this ship between October 1981 and March 1985, which allowed the Terrier air defense system to fire new Standard SM-2 missiles and improved the interaction of radars and computer systems. The system allowed the use of target illumination radars in the time-sharing mode of the Aegis type of BIUS , increasing the number of simultaneously fired targets. Some sources note that at the time of release NTU was superior to Aegis in some parameters (especially in terms of the user interface), inferior to it in the number of simultaneously tracked and fired targets. After the end of the Cold War, most NTU ships were quickly removed from the U.S. Navy due to higher maintenance costs compared to newer ships. As a result, there is currently no NTU ship in the US Navy.

Upgrade Process

Modernization under the NTU program of the Legi missile cruisers included a significant reconstruction of the ship’s interior [1] . Electronic systems were completely dismantled, for example, the long-range radar AN / SPS-40 was replaced by AN / SPS-49 . Significant modernization costs were compounded by the fact that shortly after the modernization, many ships were withdrawn from the US Navy. For example, the cruiser CG-21 Gridley was modernized in 1991 (the cost of modernization was $ 55 million), and in 1994 it was withdrawn from the fleet.

End of the Cold War

The end of the Cold War came at a time when many US Navy ships underwent costly modernization under the NTU program. All these ships were decommissioned for no more than 6 years after the end of modernization. CGN-39 Texas was decommissioned during the upgrade process.

KDX-II

The South Korean Navy is armed with destroyers of the KDX-II type , equipped with NTU BIOS.
