History

In the early years of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship , the club was not allowed to participate in the tournament due to its tough policy of accepting only Portuguese nationals to the team. However, in 1915 the club received permission to take part in the championship, and by 1923 it was among the strongest clubs in the state [2] .

Vasco da Gama is one of 4 great clubs in Rio de Janeiro, along with Flamengo , Fluminense and Botafogo . Vasco won the club championship of South America in 1948 , and in 1998 - the Libertadores Cup , marking the club’s 50th and 100th anniversary.

According to the results of the 2008 Brazilian Championship, Vasco left Serie A. for the first time in its history. According to the results of the Serie B 2009 Championship , Vasco took the first place ahead of schedule and returned to the elite. The situation almost recurred in 2013–2014, when Vasco flew out of the elite division, returned the following year, but only thanks to the third place in Serie B. In 2015, the admirals again flew out of Serie A, following the results of 2016, once again achieving a return to the elite ranking third this time in Serie B.

Stadium

The football team performs, as a rule, in its old stadium, β€œSan Januario” - all other principled opponents prefer the β€œ Maracana ”. But sometimes Vasco da Gama holds their home games there - mainly during home classics against Fla, Flu and Botafogo. From 1927 until the opening of the "Maracana" ( 1950 ), the "San Jeanuario" was the home arena of the Brazilian national team .

Symbols

Club flag

The main symbol of the club is the Maltese Cross . The expanded emblem with a caravel is never used in the form of players - the so-called β€œMaltese cross” is depicted on the black diagonal strip next to the heart (in fact, the cross of the Order of Christ , which was depicted on the navigator’s sails), and above it are the stars given to the team for various titles. Now there are eight such stars. They symbolize four victories of the team in the Brazilian championships, one - in the South American club championship in 1948, one - a victory in the Libertadores Cup, one - in the Mercosul Cup and one - for the victory in 1945 in the international tournament β€œTerra e Mar” - β€œEarth and Sea".
