97th Guards Rifle Division


The 97th Guards Rifle Poltava Red Banner Order of Suvorov and Bogdan of the Khmelnytsky Division (later the Guards Mechanized Brigade ) is the rifle division of the Armed Forces of the USSR and the military unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine .

Content

History

1943 - 1991

It was created on May 4, 1943 by renaming the 343rd Infantry Division of the 1st formation. In her new capacity she participated in battles for Poltava [1] . In commemoration of the liberation of Poltava by decree of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of September 23, 1943, No. 22 was awarded the honorary name "Poltava" [2] . As part of the 5th Guards Army, she participated in battles on the Kursk Bulge , the liberation of the Left-Bank Ukraine , Kirovograd , Uman-Botoshansk , Lviv-Sandomir , Sandomierz-Silesia , Lower Silesia , Upper Silesia , Berlin and Prague . [1] . The war ended as part of the 32nd Guards Rifle Corps . For military merits, she was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, the orders of Suvorov 2nd degree and Bogdan Khmelnitsky 2nd degree. About 8 and a half thousand of its soldiers were awarded orders and medals, 12 were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union [1] .

In the post-war period, it remained a rifle force, and in 1957 it was reorganized into a motorized rifle division, retaining the regiments of the Great Patriotic War. [3] . At the beginning of 1991 she was headquartered in Slavut as part of the 13th separate Red Banner Army of the Carpathian Military District . The division had a reduced T-72 tank fleet, one of the three motorized rifle regiments was equipped with an armored personnel carrier, the rest had no armored vehicles. Artillery was represented by mortars, MLRS and 84 self-propelled artillery mounts [3] .

After 1991

After the independence of Ukraine, the division became part of the armed forces of Ukraine .

After the creation of the Western Operational Command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1997, the division was reorganized into the 97th separate mechanized Poltava Order of the Red Banner, Suvorov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Brigade with all the previously awarded honorary names and state awards [4] .

On October 30, 2004, in connection with organizational and staffing measures, the 97th separate mechanized brigade (military unit A-1766) was disbanded [5] .
