History
Founded in 1830 under the name Oakland College . Under the conditions of racial and sexual segregation typical of the pre-war south, the college was intended exclusively for training white youths. During the Civil War between north and south, most of them were drafted into the army to participate in military events. Many died or changed their place of residence due to the extreme ruin of the south, and therefore, after the end of the war, almost no white boys of student age remained in the district. Therefore, during the so-called reconstruction of the south , the government transferred five ancient college buildings erected by blacks, as well as a number of adjacent lands of the black intelligentsia to form an institute for blacks in 1871 ; in the same year, the university was renamed Alcorn State University , in honor of James Alcorn , governor of the state [1] [2] . Admission of white students began in the 1960s, although their numbers are still small. In 1998-2009, a total of about 70 students from Russia and the CIS studied at the university. Nowadays, the university is located near the unincluded territory of Lormen , in the southwestern part of the state of Mississippi, not far from the Natchez Trace historic route 5 kilometers from the Mississippi River and the border with the state of Louisiana .
