Biography
“A rare find in the endlessly repeating and self-centered world of popular music. A bright flame, from a completely unexpected angle, illuminated the safe haven of folklore and defying the classical avant-garde. Frank Zappa mixed with Valkyrie and fueled by testosterone ”- so stunned Ian Anderson spoke of St. Petersburg accordionist and singer Evelina Petrova after she performed as part of his legendary Jethro Tull on the Oktyabrsky stage. Evelina Petrova in 1994 graduated from the Musorgsky Music College in St. Petersburg in the accordion class. After graduating from college, she entered the studio of Vyacheslav Gaivoronsky at the Theater of Musical Improvisation at the Academy of Theater Arts. Within the walls of the theater academy, she was an indispensable participant in all artistic actions and concerts initiated by V. Gaivoronsky, in an ensemble, and then in a duet with which she was engaged in jazz improvisation and joined the wide aesthetic circle of new music.
In 2002 she graduated from the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov.
Since 1997, she played as part of a duet with V. Gaivoronsky (trumpet).
In 1998, at the V International Competition dedicated to Astor Piazzolla in Italy (Castelfidardo), the duo received a special prize for originality.
In 1999, according to the unanimous opinion of Russian jazz critics, Evelina Petrova was called the opening of the year.
Since 2001, Evelina Petrova, together with Petersburg musician Viktor Sobolenko (cello), has been performing the Northern Tango project.
Along with working in various musical projects and promotions, Evelina plays solo. After recording the author’s album “The Annual Circle”, published by the British studio Leo Records in 2004, Evelina Petrova constantly performs solo programs at festivals and music clubs in Holland, France, England, Germany, Belgium, Slovenia, Finland, Italy, Norway and Canada .
In 2007, Leo Records released their second album of music by Evelina Petrova in a duet with Alexander Balanescu (Upside down), one of the most original and unpredictable musicians of our time.
One of the experimental projects with plastic art was the play "Taming the Butterfly" with the dancer of the theater "TREE" Tanya Khabarova. The idea of the performance was born in Italy at a festival in the city of Macerata and is based on mythology, a fairy tale and ancient Russian rites. Leo Records released an album ('Living water ") with music recorded from this performance at the Interior Theater (St. Petersburg).
“Evelina Petrova. A virtuoso accordionist, a talented composer, an original vocalist. One of the most striking, peculiar, deep and genuine phenomena in modern Russian music. Her work combines Russian village elements and the sophisticated traditions of the St. Petersburg underground, filigree performing skills and spontaneous improvisation, subtle artistry and the depth of musical thought. For many music lovers in Russia, Europe, Japan, the USA (wherever Evelina Petrova performed with her concerts), she is the epitome of a synthesis of modern improvisational music and the Russian folk musical spirit ”Dmitry Milkov, St. Petersburg
