In 1943–1946, he played for the local Dzerzhinets , from where a young midfielder was invited to Dynamo (Voroshilovgrad) where he spent three seasons. In 1949, Alpatov moved to Kiev , briefly played for the local Spartak, after which he received an invitation to Dynamo Kyiv, where he became the main player in the middle line of the team, having played 29 matches in the 1950 season.

But in 1951, he left the Dynamo team, moving to Shakhtar from Stalino . In his very first season for the miner's club became the bronze medalist of the USSR championship . Later Alpatov was one of the leaders of the team of the 1950s. In total, for the team of Stalino, Alexander played eight and a half years, completing his playing career in 1959.

After hanging the boots on a nail, Alexander Afanasyevich trained Gorlovsky Shakhtar and Khimik from Severodonetsk . In May 1964, he was invited to the post of senior coach to Luhansk Zarya , with whom he worked until the end of the season, after which he returned to Donetsk, where he coached the local Dynamo. From October 12, 1967, Alpatov was appointed the senior trainer of the Poltava Kolos , speaking in class “B” [1] . The following season, at the request of the city administration, the team was included in Class 2 “A” group, transferred to the care of the regional department of rural construction and renamed “Selstroy” [2] . Alpatov was given the task of retaining his place in the country's second-most powerful football division. Before the season, the team was staffed with experienced players and in general quite successfully spent the season, eleven rounds before the end of the championship, even claimed to enter the top division, but failing the championship ending, finished in the final 5th place. Since 1969, the Poltava team changed its name again, becoming the “Builder” . Alpatov's team did not have a smooth season, eventually taking only 10th place [2] . Returning from the training camp, held in the Crimea , the bus with the team had an accident, the driver and young football player Alexander Kolesnikov were killed [3] . Many football players were injured and bruised. Poltava team started the season uncertainly and by the end of the first round came in 16th place.
