Biography
Andrei Burak was born in 1911 in the village of Osveitsa (now - Verkhnedvinsk district, Vitebsk region, Belarus ) in a working family. Received incomplete secondary education. Since 1938, he lived with his family in Nizhny Tagil, Sverdlovsk region , he worked first at the Kuibyshev plant, then at the Ural lepromprom. On June 14, 1941, he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army by the Nizhny Tagil District Military Commissariat of the Sverdlovsk Region. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. By September 1943 the Red Army guard Andrei Burak was the gunner of the machine gun of the 3rd battalion of the 198th guards rifle regiment of the 68th guards rifle division of the 40th army of the Voronezh front . Distinguished during the battle for the Dnieper [1] .
On September 24, 1943, the Burak regiment approached the Dnieper near the village of Rzhishchev, Kagarlyk district, Kiev region, Ukrainian SSR . The command decided to send a group of fighters to engage in a bridgehead on its west bank. At night, this group forced the Dnieper, but came under heavy fire of superior enemy forces. Then the command sent a new group to help fighting on the bridgehead. This group also included Burak. Despite the massive enemy fire, the group crossed over and entrenched on the bridgehead. German troops made three attempts to counterattack, but they all failed. Burak was in the center of the bridgehead. With the fire of his machine gun, he destroyed about 100 enemy soldiers and officers, and also knocked out a tank . October 7, 1943, he died in battle. He was buried on the eastern outskirts of the village of Balyko-Shchuchinka in the same area [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 13, 1943, Red Army soldier Andrei Burak was posthumously awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union for “exemplary performance of the combat tasks of command on the front of the fight against the German fascist invaders and the courage and heroism shown at that time”. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
