History
Prior to the construction of the bridge, transport links across the strait were carried out by ferry. In January 1965, Foldabrulaget was established to build a permanent bridge. Along with the construction of the bridge, a tunnel was being constructed on the south side of the strait (Finnmotunnelen). The total construction cost was 8.5 million kroons. The opening of the bridge took place on December 12, 1969 - on that day the Foldereid II ferry, before which regularly transported people through the strait, made its last voyage.
