The first time he arrived in Moscow in January 1687, but did not receive permission to travel to China under the pretext that two words were missed in the letter of King Louis XIV to the Moscow sovereigns, and also because the ambassador of Moscow to France Dolgoruky was rendered "dishonor." In February 1687, Avril was expelled from Moscow.
The second time Avril tried his luck at the end of 1688, but again did not get permission. He wrote down information about Siberia and China at the court of the Polish king Jan Sobieski from a Moscow duma clerk who visited China.
