Biography

Alois Jirasek was born in 1851 in the city of Gronovo.

He worked as a school teacher. The author of a voluminous cycle of historical novels depicting the movement of the Hussites , the period of Austrian domination ("darkness") and national revival; created the dramatic series “Jan Hus”, “Jan ижižka”, “Psoglavy” and “Jan Rogach”. He is also the author of vividly written and translated into many languages “Old Czech legends” - processing (and in some cases his own fiction based on) Czech legends for children and young people. In addition to the Czech proper, the Slovak legends about Janosik and the Jewish ones about Golem are also included .

"Tales" cover events of Czech history from ancient times to the end of the 18th century [4] . The first part, “Tales of the Times of the Gentiles,” describes the life and beliefs of the Czech people until the 9th century, before writing and the penetration of Christianity on Czech soil [5] . The following are the “Tales of the times of Christianity”: from the 9th century to the end of the Middle Ages [6] . The cycle ends with "old prophecies" [7] .

In his style, Jirasek focuses on Walter Scott , his position is patriotic, the conflicts are quite straightforward, which made his novels and plays very popular during the formation of independent Czechoslovakia. It was Jirasek who read the proclamation of Czechoslovak independence on Wenceslas Square in 1918 . Since 1920, Yirasek was a deputy of the Senate from the far-right National Democratic Party. He died in Prague, but was buried in his native Gronovo.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Jirasek was criticized by the left (for example, Julius Fucik ) for participating in the creation of the official "bourgeois" mythology of the Czechoslovak Republic. However, after the communists came to power in 1948 , Jirasek’s work, by personal order of K. Gottwald, was actively promoted as a model of patriotism (cf. the struggle against cosmopolitanism in the USSR), and Czech communist writers imitated it.

In 1953, director Vaclav Krška made a biographical film about the writer "Young Years".
