Biography

The father of Mohammed was Abbas Mirza , the son of Feth Ali Shah . Abbas Mirza was the governor of Azerbaijan , who was elected heir to the throne, but died before the death of the old shah.

The English traveler and columnist James Bailey Fraser, who met with Mohammed Mirza in 1834, a little earlier than his appointment as heir to the throne, describes him as:

“The most worthy of all the numerous descendants of the Fatali Shah, in particular from the point of view of morality and personal character. Although in talents. He could not claim abundance, in military affairs he at least claims to be competent. Considering him as a whole, as a prince and as a Qajar, he is a rarity in Persia ” [1] .

Fraser describes him as “kind and smiling,” and finds his manners deprived of the boastful notions of greatness that were so offensive in many members of the royal family [1] .

England helped him with money and officers, and since then Russian and British influences began to fight in Persia. During the siege by the Shah of Herat ( 1837 ), Russian officers were in the army of the Shah and the Russian ambassador I.O.Simonich led the siege, and Great Britain helped Afghanistan ; the Afghans defeated, and by 1840, British politics gained the upper hand in Persia for a short time, but in 1846 the shah concluded an agreement with Russia, under which she received great commercial and industrial rights, as well as the right to constantly keep warships in Rasht and Astrabad .
