Georg Lilang came from the Makonde people, famous for its traditions. The artist spent almost his entire life in the former capital of Tanzania, the city of Dar es Salaam, where he also created his paintings and sculptures.
Lilanga's art was traditional and innovative at the same time. In completely individual works of art - paintings and wooden painted sculptures (shetani), the Makonde artist skillfully embodied both his unique outlook on life and the artistic traditions of his people.
Lilanga's works are represented in almost all the main expositions of African, traditional and contemporary art - in particular, they are stored in museums in Dusseldorf, Paris, London and Tokyo.
A significant number of Lilanga's works are contained in the Mawingu museum collection located in Hamburg (Germany), which is one of the largest international repositories of East African art and, in particular, the Maconde people.
At the time of the artist’s death in 2005, the Mawingu Hamburg collection of African traditional art arranged a posthumous solo exhibition of Georg Lilanga's works, classifying and thematically distributing them. Information leaflets and an art album dedicated to the various movements and types of maconde art were also released.
In addition to art galleries, much of Lilanga’s work is kept in private collections, in particular in the Netherlands. So far, this creative layer remains little known to both experts and the public.
