Biographical information

Giannis Cambisis was born in Koroni , in the family of the artist Anastasius Cambysis and Calliope Trigette. In his hometown, he graduated from primary and secondary school, and then went to Kalamata , where he completed his secondary education ( 1884 - 1888 ). Here he also took part in amateur theater productions of Ioannis H. Apostolakis.

In 1888, he moved with his family to Athens and studied law at the University of Athens ( 1888 - 1894 ), but did not become a lawyer and was forced to work for three years as an employee of the Greek Ministry of Finance. In 1898, out of boredom and despondency, he resigned and fled to Germany, where he remained until the summer of next year. Time spent in Germany (from October 1898 to July 1899 ) played a decisive role in the future life and worldview of Cambysis. Seeing intellectually and ideologically a new world, different from the Greek, Yannis Cambysis was carried away by the idea of transferring German ideals to Greek society to help him overcome the social and ideological void. It was in Germany that he came into contact with the socialist movement and the philosophy of Nietzsche , became acquainted with such figures as Henrik Ibsen , Gerhart Hauptmann and August Strindberg . In Germany, Yannis Kambisis wrote his famous “German Letters”, published during the writer's life on the pages of the Athenian magazine Techni.

However, health problems forced him to return to Greece. Soon, his grandiose plans to contribute to the spiritual rebirth of Greece erased premature death. Giannis Cambysis died at the age of 29 from tuberculosis in Athens.
