Biography
Nothing is known about Gerard's life until 860. Leo Ostia in the “ Chronicle of the Montecassino Monastery ” calls him Count Marcy, a feud on the southern borders of the Duchy of Spolet , but does not report any details about his reign [1] . It is assumed that in 860, Gerard received from the emperor Louis II of Italy the county of Camerino , which became vacant after the removal of Count Hildebert [2] .
A little later, probably already in the same year, Gerard III, together with the Duke of Spoleto Lambert II, at the request of the Mayalpot gastald from Telezia (modern Telese Terme ) and Guandelpert from Boyano took part in a campaign against the emir Bari Savdan , with the complete inactivity of Adelhiz ravaging the territory of his principality . However, according to the Chronicle of Montecassino , the Christian military leaders did not agree with each other, their army came to the battlefield near Ariano Irpino, weary of the transition, and attacked by the Saracens , fled. Gerard and both gastalds, as well as a large number of soldiers, died in the battle. Lambert II managed to escape. Thanks to the victory, Savdan was able to continue to plunder the lands of Benevento and Capua unhindered [1] [2] [3] [4] .
About who was the direct successor of Gerard III in Camerino , historical sources do not report anything. The next famous local count was Lambert Lysy , the first mention of which dates back to 871 [5] .
