The ancestor of the clan is Denes of Losonce (d. 1392), banned Croatia. One of his sons married the heiress of the noble family Banfi from Lendava and took his last name. The Landau Banffies ( Bánffy de Alsólendva ), however, existed until 1644. From among them came the first wife of the Moldavian ruler, Alexander the Good .
Descendants of Denes belonged, in particular, the castle of Boncida and the town of Banfi-Hunyad , which, due to the situation near the main roads from Transylvania to Hungary, were subjected to numerous devastations during the Turkish wars. One of their owners, a supporter of Rakoczi , heroically defended the Boncid castle against the Austrians.
