Biography

Orest Puzino was born in the family of a retired military surgeon of the court adviser Polykarp Ivanovich Puzino .

March 3, 1830 enrolled in the Naval Cadet Corps , studying in which, January 9, 1836 was promoted to midshipman and campaigned on the ship "Grand Duke Michael." On December 23 of the same year he was promoted to midshipman with the appointment to the Black Sea Fleet.

In 1837-1839, on the Pimen ship, the Hurry tender and the frigate Enos , he cruised off the Abkhaz coast. In 1840, the transport "Achilles" sailed in the Black Sea waters, and then was in the campaign on the raid of Odessa. In 1841, on the ship " Anapa " cruised in the Black Sea.

April 19, 1842 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1842-1851 on the transport vehicles Sochi, Adler, Bzyb, Cemes, steamers Molodets , Mighty , Colchis , Fighter , ship " Selafail " and the brig "Theseus" sailed off the Caucasus coast.

In the years 1852-1853 on the steam-frigate " Crimea " went between Odessa and Constantinople . On October 18, 1853, he participated in the Sinop battle as a senior officer of the steamboat frigate “Crimea” and, during the persecution of the enemy, was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV degree with a bow .

In the years 1854-1855, commanding the ship Peter the Great, sailed along the Bug and the Dnieper estuary. On March 30, 1855, he was promoted to lieutenant commander and in the same year, “for the immaculate length of service of 18 six-month naval campaigns,” he was awarded the Order of St. George IV degree .

In 1856-1858, commanding the Philoctetus brig, he moved from Kronstadt to the Mediterranean Sea, then to Constantinople , from where he sailed to the shores of Syria and Egypt, and then returned to Kronstadt, where he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav II degree with the imperial crown . In 1859 he was awarded the Danish Order of Danebrog .

In 1859-1860, commanding the 40-gun Sailing-screw frigate Svetlana , he cruised in the Mediterranean Sea. On May 2, 1860 he was appointed commander of the 6th naval crew, and on October 17 he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank and in the same year was awarded the Greek Order of the Savior .

In 1860-1861, commanding the Ilya Muromets 51-gun sail-screw frigate, he cruised in the Mediterranean Sea and made the transition to the coast of Syria, from where he returned to Kronshtadt, where on May 2, 1865 he was appointed commander of the 84-gun sail-screw ship "Gangut".

On January 1, 1863, he was promoted to captain of the 1st rank with the appointment of the head of the northern defensive line of Kronstadt and on January 3 the commander of the armored battery "Firstborn" . On August 30, "for special work on the armament of Kronstadt," he was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the II degree .

In 1864-1865 he commanded the do not touch me armored battery in the Baltic Sea and in 1865 he was awarded the imperial crown for the Order of St. Anne of the II degree and on August 1 the Swedish Order of the Sword . November 14, 1866 was appointed commander of the 5th naval crew. In 1870 he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir III degree with swords .

January 1, 1872 he was promoted to Rear Admiral with the dismissal of the crew commander and the appointment of the youngest flagship of the Baltic Fleet. In 1873 he commanded the second detachment of an armored squadron in the Gulf of Finland and on December 31 was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav I degree .

March 24, 1875 he was appointed commander of a detachment of Pacific vessels, for two years he sailed in the Far Eastern waters, off the coast of China and Japan .

In 1876, during an aggravation of relations between Russia and Great Britain, he was sent to the shores of the North American United States (USA) with a detachment of ships ( Bayan corvette; Horseman , Gaydamak , Abrek clipper; Ermine gunboat "; Transport" Japanese "; schooners" Tungus "," Ermak "," East "). Orest Polikarpovich personally developed a plan for cruising operations, in case of the onset of hostilities. In history, this campaign was called the " Second American Expedition " [1] . January 1, 1877 was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the I degree . In the summer of 1877 he returned from the USA.

In 1879-1881, he commanded the 1st detachment of destroyers in the Finnish skerries and from December 6, 1880 temporarily corrected the post of commander of the St. Petersburg port. January 1, 1879 was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, II degree . On August 30, 1882, he was promoted to vice admiral with the appointment of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich at the disposal of Admiral General. In the same year he was awarded a rental of 1,500 rubles for six years, which in 1886 was increased to 2,000 rubles a year. On June 3, 1885, he was enrolled in the fleet with the appointment of being under Admiral General Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich.

Memory

The cape in the Providence Bay of the Anadyr Gulf of the Bering Sea is named after O.P. Puzino.
