History

The stone church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was built and consecrated in 1809 [1] on the place of the previously standing wooden church outside the Kherson Gate next to the commercial forest square [2] . Initially, before the construction of the Church of All Saints at the Kherson cemetery in 1816, the wooden and stone churches were intended for the cemetery [3] . Soon after the consecration of a stone church, a small wooden chapel was built near, opposite the Rassylna street, [4] .

In the years 1911-1914 [1] by the design of the construction engineer Pavel Nikolaevich Rudenko, who was an assistant to the Kursk diocesan architect Fedorov [5] , a western porch was attached to the building of the temple, and a one-story brick parochial school was built nearby [3] .

In 1933, the temple was closed, and soon the bell tower was destroyed. During the German occupation at the end of 1941, the church was opened, but closed again in 1950 [2] . The building housed the warehouse of the military unit, then the warehouse of the Central Department Store [6] . In the winter of 1989, the church was returned to the Kursk-Belgorod diocese , and restoration work began in May [2] . The last consecration took place in 1989 [6] . In 1992, the bell tower was restored [1] [7] .

Architecture and decoration of the temple

The temple is one-story, double-lighted, single-domed, in classical style . The central volume of the building is massive, rectangular in plan, four pillars, completed by a four-tiered bell tower and a four- domed dome with a closed vault. The main mushroom dome is set on a high base [5] . On the east side there is a semicircular apse , on the west side there is a small refectory with attached porch [3] . The windows of the temple have arched completion with a wide profiling [5] .

The temple has three thrones: the main one is the apostle John the Divine , the holy great martyr Barbara , the holy Panteleimon the Healer [6] .
