Biography
Yannis Tsaruhis was born in 1910 in Piraeus . In the period 1929 - 1935 he studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts , was a student of Fotios Kontoglu, who introduced him to Byzantine iconography. In parallel, he also studied folk architecture and traditions of the Greek folk costume. Together with Dimitris Pikionis , Fotios Kontoglu and Angelika Hatzimihali, he led the movement for the introduction of the Greek tradition in painting.
Between 1935 and 1936, he visited Istanbul , Paris and Italy, where he became acquainted with the art of the Renaissance and Impressionism , discovered the work of Theophilos Hatzimihail, artists such as Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti greatly influenced his artistic perception.
He returned to Greece in 1936 and two years later created his first solo exhibition in Athens. He participated in the battles of the Italo-Greek war in 1940 . In 1949, he and other artists, including Nikos Hatzikiriakos-Gikas , Yannis Moralis , Nikos Nikolaou, Nikos Engonopoulos and Panagiotis Tetsis, created the Armos art circle. In 1951 , exhibitions of Tsaruhis's works were held in Paris and London . In 1958, he participated in the Venice Biennale . In 1967 he moved to Paris.
In 1982, the Museum of Yannis Tsaruhis was opened, which became the artist's house in the Athens suburb of Marousi. The Yannis Tsaruhis Foundation also operates. The artist died in 1989 in Athens.
