History

The Church of San Francisco was built in 1943 as one of the architectural elements of the administrative district of Pampulha, the construction of which began in 1940 around the eponymous artificial lake. The initiator of the construction of Pampulha was the mayor of Belo Horizonte Juscelino Kubitschek , the future president of Brazil.

The church is one of the most famous examples of Brazilian modernism . It was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and engineer Joaquin Cardozo . The architectural style of the temple and its paintings from the very beginning caused a negative reaction from the archbishop of the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte Antoniu dos Santos Cabral. He stated that the temple is unsuitable for worship [2] . For 14 years, she was not allowed to conduct services because of her extremely unusual form and murals [3] . From certain angles, its shape resembles a sickle and a hammer (it is known that Niemeyer is a convinced communist).

Successor to Juscelin Kubitschek as mayor after unsuccessful attempts to destroy the temple, filled the church premises with objects of worship of various art directions. Later, the temple became the property of the National Department of Art and Historical Heritage. After the temple was restored in 1958, the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte consecrated the church in April 1959.

Architecture

The outer walls are painted by Candidu Portinari (figurative painting, St. Francis preaches to the fish) and Paulo Wernecom (abstract painting). The garden around the church was designed by Burle-Marx. The church stands on the shore of the lake and is made of reinforced concrete . In shape, it resembles an aircraft hangar with a parabolic roof and two side extensions. Near the church building there is a bell tower in the shape of a prism , expanding upward. The interior of the church has fourteen picturesque panels made by Portinari.
