Biography
Ivan Yegorovich Gavrysh was born on January 16 ( January 3 according to the old style ) in 1918 in a peasant family in the village of Lelyukhovka of the Kobelyak district of the Poltava province of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (now the village of the Novosanzharsky district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ). He graduated from seven classes of a rural school. Then he moved to the city of Orekhovo-Zuevo, Moscow Region . He worked at the Karbolit plant, first in the press workshop, then in the press powder workshop. At the same time he was engaged in a flying club.
I.E. Gavrysh was drafted into the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army in 1938 and sent to the Engels Military Aviation School of Pilots. Since 1939, Junior Lieutenant Gavrysh served in the 21st Long-Range Bomber Aviation Regiment of the Leningrad Military District . He participated in the Soviet-Finnish war. He fought on a DB-3 bomber. After the end of the Winter War, the regiment was transferred to the Saki airfield of the Odessa Military District and became part of the 22nd Aviation Division of the 4th Bomber Aviation Corps of Long-Range Bomber Aviation.
In battles with the Nazi invaders, the commanding officer of the bombers was Lieutenant I. E. Gavrysh from June 23, 1941. During the war years, he fought on the DB-3F ( Il-4 ), SB , B-25 aircraft . On June 23, 1941, Ivan Yegorovich participated in a long-range bombing raid on the oil fields in Ploiesti and the port of Constanta ( Romania ). At the end of June 1941, the regiment was part of the 50th Air Division , and from mid-August 1941 - the Air Force of the 51st Army . Ivan Yegorovich participated in the defense of the Crimea , repeatedly, on instructions from the command, incapacitated the batteries of German long-range guns in the Perekop area. Due to the threat of the occupation of Crimea by German troops, the regiment was withdrawn to the Kuban and rejoined the 50th Aviation Division. The senior lieutenant Gavrysh’s link took part in the battles in the Donbass , delivering bombing strikes against enemy troop accumulations, its airfields and infrastructure. In late 1941, Ivan Yegorovich was promoted to captain and presented to the Order of the Red Banner , but the award did not take place. In total, by April 1942, Captain I.E. Gavrysh made 90 successful sorties, including 77 sorties at night, dropped 82 tons of air bombs. In air battles, the crew of Ivan Egorovich was shot down by a German bomber He-111 .
On June 20, 1942, by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Captain I. E. Gavrysh was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
By March 1942, the 21st Long-Range Bomber Aviation Regiment had finally focused on long-range bombing, mainly at night, and on March 18, 1942 was renamed the 21st Long-Range Aviation Regiment. Until August 1943, captain I.E. Gavrysh, acting in the interests of the Leningrad , Western and Steppe fronts , made about 80 sorties to bombard the enemy’s infrastructure and its front line of defense. By August 1943, Ivan Yegorovich was promoted to majors and was appointed commander of the 2nd Squadron of the 22nd Guards Aviation Regiment of the 5th Guards Aviation Division of the 4th Guards Aviation Corps of Long Range Aviation . In 1943-1944, the squadron of the Major Major I. E. Gavrysh participated in all major operations of the Red Army. By the beginning of 1945, long-range aviation, in connection with a decrease in the radius of action, gradually began to lose its significance, and on December 6, 1944, the 18th Air Army was created on its base. On December 26, 1944, the 22nd Guards Long Range Aviation Regiment was transformed into the 238th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment. Guards Squadron Major I. E. Gavrysh participated in the Vistula-Oder , East Prussian and Berlin offensive operations.
