History

The appearance of the city is associated with the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty of 1947 , according to which a new border was established between Italy and Yugoslavia . The border left most of the historical region of Horiska at the foot of the Julian Alps within Slovenia as part of Yugoslavia; however, its largest city, Gorica ( Italian: Gorizia Gorizia ), moved to Italy.

In 1948, the Yugoslav government implemented an ambitious project to build the border of a new city on the Yugoslav side, directly adjacent to the Italian border and Gorizia. As a result, a virtually single city was formed, divided by the state border into two parts. The railway station Nova Goritsy is located on the border. Gorizia also has its own railway station located in the south of the city.

Attractions

To the south of the city is Kostanjevica Hill, on which stands the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Franciscan monastery of the 17th century. The last French king of the Bourbon dynasty Charles X and his family are buried in the crypt of the Church of the Annunciation. Charles X fled France during the 1830 revolution, taking refuge with his relatives in Goritsa, which belonged to Austria at that time. Here he died.

In Nova Gorica there is a Jewish cemetery belonging to the community of Gorizia, the oldest tombstones on it date back to the 13th century. After dividing the city, the Jewish community remained on the Italian side and started a new cemetery. The old cemetery turned out to be in the forbidden border zone, due to which it was perfectly preserved. In the 1990s, large-scale restoration work was carried out on it. The Italian philosopher and writer Carlo Mikelstedter is buried in the cemetery.

To the north of Nova Gorica is Sveta Gora, 682 meters high, on top of which there is a temple and museum dedicated to the battles at Isonzo (Sochi) during the First World War .
