Oscar Niemeyer himself described his work:
“Once upon a time a flying saucer flying over the city admired the beauties of these places and decided to stay here forever and, landing on this place, laid the foundation for the Museum of Modern Art”
.
A sixteen-meter smooth concrete cylindrical structure on a thin leg with a glass belt is at the same time similar to a UFO and an exotic plant growing on the edge of a cliff. The panoramic window of the museum, located on the very shore of the Guanabara Bay , offers a wonderful view across the bay to Rio de Janeiro , the statue of Christ and the Sugar Loaf . The diameter of the three-story "plate" is 50 meters , while the diameter of the column on which it is installed is only 9 meters [1] . The column stands in the middle of a small reservoir , which additionally gives the building a visual lightness. In order to enter the museum, you need to go along a long spiral ramp . Having overcome the climb, the visitor immediately enters the premises of an art gallery in the shape of a circle with a large panoramic window.
The permanent exhibition of the museum grew out of 1217 works of the collection of Joan Sattamini, which he collected for 45 years and donated to the museum [2] . This is the second largest collection of contemporary art in Brazil. In addition to him, the museum constantly hosts exhibitions of Brazilian and foreign artists [3] .
