Catalan bread and tomato ( pantumac ; cat. Pa amb tomàquet ) is a traditional Catalan dish.
Catalan bread with tomato is a slightly toasted slice of white bread (often toast ), sometimes pre-grated with garlic, which is then rubbed with half the tomato. After the tomato, olive oil and salt are added. In many Catalan restaurants, tomato mix (with salt and olive oil) is prepared in advance.
The dish is served as a side dish for sausages, ham, cheeses, anchovies, fish or fried vegetables instead of regular bread.
There is no consensus on the origin of the dish, however, it is clear that it was created relatively long ago, since tomatoes appeared in Europe in the 16th century. Perhaps Catalan bread with tomato appeared during the Spanish Civil War, when little but tomatoes was available to add to bread, slices of which were dried to preserve for a rainy day.
