The purpose of this work is to show the reader the modern peoples of Africa, their life, culture, the struggle for national independence, for freedom, against colonial enslavement. With such a variety of issues and with a weak and sometimes complete lack of study of certain problems of the history and ethnography of African peoples, some aspects of life are covered rather briefly and incompletely.

Russian, and especially Soviet, science has accumulated a large amount of material before the ethnography of the peoples of Siberia. But so far, there has not yet appeared a consolidated, generalizing work that would sum up what was done and familiarize the reader with these peoples who had been revived to a new life by the Great October Socialist Revolution. This book is the first experience of a summary of the ethnography of Siberia and is intended for a wide circle of readers.
In this volume, articles on the peoples of the Far North and the Far East are highlighted in a separate section, which opens with a special article covering the main stages of socialist construction among these peoples. Another section is devoted to the peoples of southern Siberia. Both sections are prefaced with introductory articles of a general nature, including a historical and ethnographic essay on the Russian population of Siberia, whose economy, culture and life have had a huge impact on the peoples of Siberia. The following descriptions of individual nations and introductory articles were based on new field materials by Soviet researchers on ethnography, archeology and anthropology, collected over the last three to four decades, extensive museum collections stored in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the USSR Peoples' Academy of Sciences and Ethnography Museum ( b) Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum) in Leningrad, and a large ethnographic literature, published both in the pre-Soviet and in the Soviet periods. Numerous expeditions to Siberia, organized during the Soviet period by various scientific institutions of our country, greatly expanded the circle of sources, enriched them with new and valuable materials. Among the expeditions there were a lot of specially ethnographic. Some of the participants in these expeditions are no longer alive. On the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, the brave G. D. Verbov, N. P. Nikulypin, S. M. Stebnitsky, N. B. Schnackenburg died of death. N. Lipskaya and G. N. Prokofyev died in the difficult months of the siege of Leningrad.
This paper is written primarily by a team of employees of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The author's work on the heads of the volume was distributed as follows:
