Mosheim was the leading church historian of his time. Until 1747, he was the general school inspector of the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel . In parallel, he was a professor at the Helmstedt University and the abbot of the Mariental and Michelstein monasteries. After that, he played an important role in the creation of the University of Gottingen , where in 1747 he became a professor, and also - the first and only scientist in the history of the university - the chancellor. An important event for the new university was the visit of King George II to Göttingen on August 1, 1748.

Thanks to the modern interpretation of the history of the church, Mosheim was considered the “father of modern church history” and also the founder of the pragmatic history of the church. In his opinion, the history of the church was determined by human activity. He was not only the author of many theological works and works on the history of the church, but also a recognized and popular preacher.
