Seven - time world champion (1990, 1992-1996, 1999). One of the most titled players in the history of snooker - 36 wins in rating tournaments [5] (Ronnie O'Sullivan, having won the Tour Championship rating tournament on March 24, 2019, was able to repeat this record of Stephen Hendry in the number of rating tournaments won). In nine seasons (including 8 consecutive seasons) he occupied the first line of the world ranking . Member of the Snooker Hall of Fame since 2011 . Many experts call him one of the best snooker players of our time.

In 1994, Stephen Hendry was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

Biography and career

Born in Edinburgh, became famous in Fife , where he graduated from Inverkeithing High School - one of the oldest schools in the UK.

He lived in the small Scottish city of Ohterader with his wife Mandy, as well as sons Blaine (born 1996) and Carter (born 2004). Divorced after 19 years of marriage. New wife Lauren is 20 years younger than him. [6]

The Amateur Years (1981–1985)

Hendry began playing snooker in 1981 at the age of 12, when his father, Gordon Hendry, presented a children's table for Christmas [7] . Two years later, Stephen won the Scottish Championship for players no older than 16 years old. He also participated in the junior version of the Pot Black tournament. In 1984, he won the Scottish Amateur Championship, and at the World Amateur Championship, he became the youngest participant in the history of the tournament. In 1985, having successfully defended the Scottish champion, Hendry began his professional career. At the age of 16 and 3 months, he became the youngest professional player in snooker history. Hendry's manager was Iain Doyle. [7]

Career start (1986–1988)

In the first season, Hendry managed to break into the 32 best players of the Classic series tournament and win the 1986 Scottish Championship, becoming the youngest champion. He also turned out to be the youngest player to break into the main draw of the World Cup - this record was surpassed only in 2012, when Luke Bresel overcame the qualification at the age of 17 years and 1 month [8] . At the tournament, Hendry lost 8–10 to Willie Thorne , who applauded him.

The following season, Hendry won the Scottish Championship again, reached the quarter finals in the Grand Prix series and the World Cup , where he lost 12–13 to the current and future champion Joe Johnson , and made his way to the Classic semi-finals. Together with Mike Hallett, Hendry won the World Championship among couples.

In the 1987/88 season, Hendry won the first ranking tournament - the Grand Prix - defeating Dennis Taylor in the final with a score of 10–7, and the British Open. He also won three more trophies: retained the Scottish and doubles world titles (with Hallett) and won the Australian Masters. By the end of the season, Hendry climbed to fourth place in the ranking and was named the athlete of the year according to BBC Scotland .

The following season, he was unable to win a single ranking tournament, but he excelled at New Zealand Masters and won the first title of the Masters tournament in .

World champion and number one in the ranking (1989–1999)

The 1989/90 season marked the beginning of Hendry’s dominance in world snooker. He won the UK Championship , Dubai Classic , Asian Open, Scottish Masters , Masters [9] and won the World Championship for the first time, winning Jimmy White in the 18–12 finals [10] . Thanks to these achievements, he, at the age of 21, took the first line in the world ranking.

The following season, Hendry set a new record by winning five ranking tournaments, and for the third time he excelled in the Masters series tournaments, winning the final with Mike Hallett from 0–7 to 9–8. However, Hendry could not defend the world title: in the quarterfinals, he was pulled out of the fight by Steve James .

In the 1991/92 season, Hendry regained the world title, in the final with Jimmy White giving a winning streak of 10 taken frames. Added to this are victories in the Grand Prix and at the Wales Open Championship . The Masters tournament was just as successful, and during the Matchroom League game, he made a break of 147 points for the first time in his career.

A year later, Hendry again became the world champion and won the Masters for the fifth time in a row. In the 1993/94 season, the snooker player was waiting for the tense finals in the World Cup , which he won with minimal margin over Jimmy White.

In 1997, Stephen Hendry met Ronnie O'Sullivan in the finale of the Liverpool Victoria Charity Challenge. In a match before 9 victories, Hendry made a good start, leading 6–1, and then 8–2, having made three century breaks for 110, 129 and 136 points, O'Sullivan scored 106 points once in two frames won. After that, O'Sullivan took six frames in a row, equalizing. In the decisive frame, Hendry rolled a red ball with a long shot and went under the black one, after which he cleared the table, gaining a maximum break of 147 points and winning the tournament.

In the 1994/95 season, after being awarded the Order of the British Empire , Hendry won three ranking tournaments, including the World Championship and the UK Championship. In the final of the UK Championship against Ken Doherty, he made seven Century Breaks and won 10-5. This match journalist David Hendon called the best game in history.

In the 1995/96 season, Hendry retained the title of world champion and champion of Great Britain. After the World Cup finals against Peter Ebdon , which ended with a score of 18-12, Hendry caught up with the number of world crowns with Ray Reardon and Steve Davis .

In 1997, BBC Scotland named Hendry the athlete of the year for the second time. Three rating tournaments submitted to Hendry this season, but Ken Doherty, who defeated Hendry in the finals of 18-12, turned out to be stronger in the dispute over the world title.

Since next season, Steven Hendry’s long-standing dominance has subsided. He won just one ranking tournament - Thailand Masters . In 1998, in the Masters finals, Hendry led 9–6 in the final against Mark Williams and had to win only one frame to win, but missed some chances and ultimately made a mistake on the black ball in the decisive frame, giving Williams a victory. Many consider this match one of the greatest in the history of snooker. Hendry lost his first position in the world ranking, the first time since 1990, and in the World Championship he took off in the first round, losing 4-10 to Jimmy White.

The 1998/99 season began with an unexpected loss of 0–9 in the first round of the UK Championship, which made his way through qualification to Marcus Campbell . However, by the end of the season, Hendry regained shape and won the Scottish Open and the record-breaking seventh World Cup . In the semifinals, he defeated Ronnie O'Sullivan 17–13, after which he defeated Mark Williams 18–11 in the final. But it was his last world title.

Subsequent Career (1999-2012)

Hendry during the 2002 World Cup

The next season began successfully for Hendry: he won three rating tournaments, including the British Open, where he managed to make the fifth in his career and the first maximum break in the rating tournament finals. However, in the first round of the World Cup, he was unexpectedly beaten by the competition debutant Stuart Bingham .

The 2000/01 season for a player of the Hendry level can be called a failure: he did not win a single rating tournament, which has not happened since the 1988/89 season , and only played once in the final.

However, in the next season he managed to win the European Open Snooker Championship and get close to the eighth world title. In the semifinals, he defeated the current champion Ronnie O'Sullivan 17–13 and only in the last final frame lost the victory to Peter Ebdon . Later, Hendry did not play in the finals of the World Cup.

In the 2002/03 season, the Open Championship of Wales remained for Hendry, however, besides him, the finals in the ranking tournaments were only the finals of the Masters and the European Open .

In the 2003/04 season, Hendry excelled at the UK Open and the Premier League , and also played in the UK Championship finals, where he lost 8–10 to Matthew Stevens . The same season brought Steven Hedry a devastating defeat from Ronnie O'Sullivan in the semifinals of the World Cup with a score of 4-17.

The 2004/05 season was marked by only one victory in the ranking tournament, the last in Hendry's career: he won the Malta Cup . Two more tournaments ended in a loss in the finals: the Open Wales Championship , where Ronnie O'Sullivan won with the smallest margin, and the Chinese Open , where Ding Junhui was the best.

Season 2005/06 wins in ranking tournaments did not bring. The best achievement was the semifinals of the UK championship, where he was defeated by Steve Davis, 9: 6. Losing was waiting for Stephen in the Premier League final. Here Ronnie defeated Stephen, 6-0, in the “one-goal” match. Stephen lost in the first round of the Masters to Alan McManus , 4: 6, and then failed to defend the Malta title. Frisky start - a victory over Neil Robertson , 5: 1, (and Hendry made as many as 4 Century in this match) led to a defeat from John Higgins, 2: 5, in the quarterfinals. Hendry didn't play well in other tournaments either. As a result, the competition between him and Ronnie O'Sullivan in the fight for first place was supposed to end, since both of them spent the season just awfully. Hendry, on top of that, lost to Nigel Bond at 9:10 in the first round of the World Cup, failing to score a control black ball. But, paradoxically, Hendry was the first again at the end of this season. Something that did not work out for him, starting in 1998, happened, but by coincidence, and not because of Stephen's strong play.

In the 2006/07 season, Hendry lost in the second round of the Northern Ireland Trophy tournament to Stephen Lee 4: 5. Lost in the first round of the Pot Black Cup to Ken Doherty. At the Grand Prix, he showed an unprecedented game, losing to all players except Mark Selby in his group and finishing in last place. Stephen did not manage to break into the main competitions of the Premier League and took only 6th place in the group stage. Rehabilitation came at the UK Championship. At first, Hendry barely defeated Dave Harold , 9: 7, but then he beat Mark Williams, 9: 6. In the quarterfinals, Ronnie O'Sullivan refused to continue the match with him, motivating it with his disgusting game, and surrendered with a score of 1: 4. In the semifinals, Stephen defeated Graham Dott , and it would seem that here is the return of Hendry to the snooker elite. But in the final, he hopelessly lost to Peter Ebdon, 6:10, despite the fact that Stephen was in the lead 3: 1. At Masters, Hendry lost to Ding Junhui in the semifinals, but he managed to reach the quarter finals in Malta, where he lost in the decisive frame to Alister Carter . In Malta, the Scot made his record - 700th - Century Break in a match with Milkins . At the Welsh Open, he was defeated by Neil Robertson, 3: 5. Hendry scored a lot of very difficult balls and managed to reduce the gap from 0: 4 to 3: 4, but in the eighth game Neil showed a very strong game in the series of wagering and put in a difficult snooker, from which Hendry went perfectly. But since Stephen was playing from snooker, Neil still had a complex red in the middle, putting it in a pocket, Neil, as it turned out, did not allow Stephen to approach the table anymore. At the China Open, he lost in the first round to Marco Fu , 4: 5. At the World Cup, he barely controlled David Gilbert , 10: 7, although at first he lost 1: 5. In the second round, Carter inflicted a serious defeat on Hendry, 13: 6. As a result, number 1 dropped to eighth place in the ranking.

The first half of the 2007/08 season , to put it mildly, did not work out. Stephen in the new ranking tournament - Shanghai Masters - defeated only Nigel Bond, of course not returning all the “debt”, but at least part of it for the defeat at the 2006 World Cup in the first round, and then lost to Stephen Lee. Lost in the semifinals of Pot Black to Sean Murphy , first beating Neil Robertson. At the Grand Prix, before the last match he had a chance to leave the group, but, losing to the little-known Mark Davis , he did not go to the next round. After winning the first match, he lost again to Murphy, this time at the Northern Ireland Trophy 2007 . In the championship of Great Britain in the first round he spent one of his already failed accidents, this time with Mark Allen , losing 4: 9. And only in the Premier League did Hendry make a good start, defeating, for example, Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins, Neil Robertson. But it all ended in defeat in the semifinals from the same Ronnie, 1: 5.

In the second half of the season at Masters 2008, Stephen lost the future champion Mark Selby 5: 6 in a bitter struggle, although he led 5: 3. In Malta, which is now no longer rated, Stephen managed to take a beautiful revenge from Selby, where yielding 0-2, he took the remaining 4 frames. Then he was beaten by Tony Drago and there was a draw with Stephen Maguire . But in the decisive match for leaving the group, Hendry again lost to Murphy, with no chance - 1: 5, although then it became clear that glimpses were outlined in the game of the seven-time world champion. Indeed, at two of the three remaining rating tournaments: at the Welsh Open and at the season’s main start - the World Cup, Stephen occasionally showed a game that was close to his best form and reached the semi-finals in both tournaments, and he also lost to future winners both times. At the Welsh Open in the semifinals, he once again met with Selby and lost in a difficult match, 4: 6, however, demonstrating 2 centimeters. And finally, at the World Championships, Hendry took revenge on Allen in the opening match, but how difficult the match was! After the first break, Hendry conceded, 3: 6, and in the first frame of the new session, Stephen managed to play 2 of Snooker he needed from Allen, after which he brilliantly played the remaining position. Then the score was already 7: 9, and Allen had some excellent opportunities to win the match. But the young Mark, who showed his best game, showed ardor, and the highly experienced Hendry received chances in each of the remaining frames and was accurate at key points - a 10: 9 victory . Next, Hendry confidently outplayed what was considered the favorite in the match of Dean Junhui, 13: 7, and with the same score, Ryan Day . It’s hard to say what contributed most to the defeat in the semifinals, 6:17, from Ronnie O'Sullivan after the score 4: 1 in favor of Stephen, even though, according to Stephen, Ronnie showed “the best game demonstrated in matches against him ever. " At the end of the season, Hendry was able to rise to 2 lines of the official rating, that is, to 6th position.

Season 2008/09

Hendry spent the beginning of the 2008/09 season in a bad way. In many tournaments, he dropped out in the first round, and only in the Bahrain Championship did he reach the semifinals, where he lost to Matthew Stevens, 4: 6. At Masters 2009, Hendry lost in his first match. At the 2009 World Cup, Hendry in the first round defeated his principal rival at the beginning of the XXI century , Mark Williams, with a score of 10: 7, although Stephen was 5-7 behind the game.

Records

In addition to the titles at the World Championships, he is a five-time champion of Great Britain, a six-time champion of Masters (he won five titles in a row, in 1989-1993), a six-time champion of the Premier League and a four-time champion of the Grand Prix. In total, he has 36 rating titles, 11 maximum breaks of 147 points (among them one at the world championships of 1995, 2009 and 2012). Hendry earned more than any other snooker player (except Ronnie O'Sullivan) - about 9 million pounds. During his career, he has made more than seven hundred Century breaks - an average of 28 Century per season, and 52 Century in one season (1995/96). In addition, he holds a record for the number of centimeters in one rating tournament - 16 ( World Cup 2002 ) and in one match - 7 (final match of the 1994 British Championship against Ken Doherty). Hendry also longer than any other player in the top 16 of the world ranking - 24 consecutive seasons, of which he spent 9 seasons as the first number.
