Geography of the service sector is a section of economic geography , a sub-sector of geography of the tertiary sector , which studies the patterns and features of the development of the territorial structure of the service sector . It is sometimes regarded as a synonym for the geography of the tertiary sector , but the latter includes, in addition to individual and business services, the geography of industries such as information services, finance, communications, trade, education, healthcare, R&D, sports, tourism and others [1] .
In Soviet times, due to the lack of services other than consumer services in a planned economy, the geography of the service sector , which studied the territorial organization of the public service sector, or social infrastructure, developed in the USSR and the countries of people's democracy. The main methodological constructions were formulated in the 1960-1970s. In theoretical terms, the geography of the service sector was mainly based on the concept of population needs and the theory of central places .
