1997-2002
Bobby Deol first appeared on the screen as a child actor in the film "The Eternal Tale of Love " (1977), playing the hero of his father in childhood [3] . His adult debut took place in 1995 with Twinkle Khanna in the film Rainy Season directed by Rajkumar Santoshi . Deol plays Badal, a naive but smart young man who moves from a small village to a big city and gets involved in a showdown with corrupt police and criminal groups. During filming in Scotland , Deol broke his leg while riding and was forced to cancel several advertising photographs [4] . The film, however, was a significant success and earned him the Filmfare Award for best male debut role [3] .
In 1997, Deol starred in the thriller Hidden Truth Director Rajeev Raya . The ensemble of actors includes Manisha Koyrala , Kadzhol , Paresha Ravala , Raja Babbara and Oma Puri , Bobby played the role of Sahir, a young man mistakenly accused of killing his adoptive father and imprisoned. "Hidden Truth" was highly praised for the plot and soundtrack and has become a major commercial success [5] . In the same year, Bobby Deol appeared in "And They Loved Each Other" - the debut film of Aishwarya Rai in Hindi. However, the film could not fend for itself at the box office and failed [5] .
In 1998, Bobby starred in the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film "Next to you." Deol plays Birge, an irresponsible young man from a middle-class family in Himachal Pradesh, with a love of petty theft and deception. Then in the same year he took part in the military thriller “ Abasss and Mastan Burmavalla “ Good Name ” along with Prity Zinta and Rakhi Gulzar . Deol plays the mysterious character Vicki, as it later turns out the son of a man convicted of arms smuggling. In 1999, he starred in “Fascinated by You,” which became the directorial debut of his older brother, as well as the first film in which Sunny and Bobby play together. Suparn Verma from Rediff.com called the plot of the film contrived and stereotyped, but praised the role of Bobby [6] .
In 2000, Deol took part in the film "Involuntarily Assassin" directed by Raj Kanvara paired with Rani Mukherjee . The film takes place in 1984, when riots swallowed part of Punjab and Delhi . Deol plays Badal, a boy who witnessed the massacre of his family and his fellow villagers by a corrupt police inspector and grew up to become a terrorist, fueled by his anger and hatred of the authorities, who unjustly deprived his family and friends. After that, he starred with “ Karimma Kapoor ” in “Magic of Love” and together with Rani Mukherjee in “Scorpio”, an obvious remake of “ Leon ” by Luc Besson [7] . Deol played the role played in the original by Jean Reno , a young man, after the suicide of his mother and sisters, caused by an unjust accusation of prostitution, who became a hit man and subsequently decided to help his neighbor to avenge the death of her family. The film and Bobby’s play were sharply criticized, Sakanya Verma of Rediff.com referred to the film as “one of the most annoying of the year” and commented on “Bobby Deol's performance is pretty, well, automatic. He scrupulously clings to a brooding facial expression throughout the film. Why oh, why no one insisted that he go to acting school? ” [7] .
In 2001, Deol starred with Karishma Kupur and Rahul Dev in a film by Indra Kumar "Abduction of a beloved." The film failed at the box office and received a critical rating of [8] c. After that, he starred in the thriller of the Bourmavall brothers, “ The Cunning Stranger, ” based on the 1992 American film “ By Mutual Consent, ” along with Karina Kapoor , Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu . His character is a young husband who moved with his wife to Switzerland , who, having initially established good relations with his neighbors, finds himself embroiled in a web of deceit and extramarital affairs. Zia-us-Salaam from The Hindu was dissatisfied with his role, noting that he “only occasionally manages to convey the fear of hiding from the law” [9] .
In the same year, Bobby starred with his brother in the historical film Martyrs March 23, 1931, which depicts an event resulting in the execution of the Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and his associates Rajguru and Sukhdev on March 23, 1931 . The film caused a mixed reaction of critics. Rediff.com believed that the film had many good moments and many bad ones, and suggested that the film could be more perfect than the original, [[Member:]] however, the agony of Bhagat Singh's struggle was executed without pressure, reducing cruelty and suffering which he underwent in real life [10] . From the point of view of critics, Bobby loses the role of Ajay Devgan , who played the role of Bhagat in the film “ The Legend of Bhagat Singh ” in the same year [K 1] [10] [11] .
In 2002, Deol was nominated for the Filmfare Award for his role as a courteous and wealthy entrepreneur in the romantic thriller “Abbas Mastan 's Dream of a Scam” inspired by the movie "The Perfect Kill " (1998) [12] . His partners on the set were Amisha Patel and Akshay Khanna . The painting as a whole was praised by critics, Chitra Mahesh of The Hindu said: “Bobby Deol spends the entire first half looking blinded and drugged, but overcomes his numbness towards the end, where he really gives a good performance” [13] . His other film of the same year was The Thief-Policeman by David Dhawan , based on the Hollywood movie "The Diamond Policeman ." In addition to Bobby, Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetti and Om Puri took part in the tape. In 2003, Deol took a break in filming.
2004-2007
Bobby Deol returned to the screen in 2004 in the movie "By the Doom of Rock" paired with Priyanka Chopra . In the drama Crime Undertale, Bobby starred with Lara Dutta and Rahul Dev, playing the role of an army officer devastated by grief. The film raised the theme of police brutality, corruption and justice. [14] [15] Deol again played an army officer in the film Devotion Anil Sharma . The film, which included such famous Bollywood actors as Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, despite great expectations, failed at the box office [16] .
In 2005, Bobby starred in Vikram Bhatt ’s thriller “In the Clutches of Betrayal”, playing a bagatoy businessman who suspects his wife of treason. His performance was praised by a number of critics. [17] Deol then starred with Sanjay Dutt , Sunil Shetti and Ajay Devgan in Mani Shankar’s war film “Tango Charlie” as an Indian soldier fighting the Bodo militants in Upper Assam . This was followed by a role in Sunil Darshan’s melodrama “ And it will rain ... ” along with Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu. The film was not successful with critics, Zia-us-Salaam concluded that “The moth-eaten love triangle with all Bollywood stereotypes survives at the expense of a devoted wife, another woman with her miniskirt, a close-knit family, song, holidays ...“ And it will rain ... “just saturated with mediocrity” [18] . She was equally unimpressed by Deol’s game, noting that “The guy seems completely lost, making you wonder that Bobby hasn’t grown an inch like an actor since he debuted in the Rajkumar Santoshi movie of the same name [K 2 ] ” [18] . His last film in 2005 was Friends Forever, which also starred Akshay Kumar, Lara Datta, Karina Kapoor and Juhi Chawla . The film had moderate success in India, but became the highest grossing Indian film of the year in the UK.
In 2006, Deol starred in the melodrama "In the Name of Love", playing Raja who falls in love with a blind girl (Amisha Patel), while his best friend ( Arjun Rampal ) turns out to be his rival in love. Bobby and Amish were nicknamed “the Bollywood equivalent of Hugh Grant and Renee Zellweger ” [19] . Although the film received mixed reviews, a number of critics praised Bobby's game. Taran Adarsh commented: “Bobby Deol is only getting better as an actor. He manages to achieve an effect in the film, which belongs primarily to Amish and Arjun ” [20] . Later that year, he appeared in the song “ Alien, Sabse Alag .”
In 2007, Deol took part in six films. The first of these, The Jackalac Boom Boom, was filmed in South Africa [21] and is based on conflict and pressure in the music industry. The film in which Bobby starred along with Upen Patel , Kanganoy Ranaut and Celina Jaytley mostly received praise from critics, especially for the choreography [22] , and Deol received some very positive reviews. Taran Adarsh said after watching the film: “Both Bobby and Upen got fabulous roles, and two actors make the most of it [the film]. Bobby is one of the most underrated actors. His work remains unchanged throughout, but, as a rule, the abilities of this talented actor are always ignored. Look at him, who has become a negative [character] in “Jackalaka Boom Boom” and you will agree that he is one of the best in business today ” [22] .
Deol’s second film this year was “The Giver of Love,” where he starred with Abhishek Bachchan , Prizy Zinta and Lara Datta. The director was Shaad Ali, who shot the film under the banner of Yash Raj Films with Yash and Aditya Chopra as producers [23] . The film was not accepted by critics and received a negative rating, mainly for a superficial script. Taran Adarsh gave him 1.5 stars out of 5, saying: “the film is a solid gloss without content” [24] . He also considered that Deol was obscured by his colleagues in the film, noting that the film “belongs primarily to Abhishek and then to Prity” [24] . Subsequently, Bobby starred in the drama about boxing, "Native People." The film was a family business, featuring Bobby Deol next to his father Dharmendra , a retired disgraced boxer who coaches Bobby and his brother ( Sunny Deol ) to make them champions, but creates a split in the family. “Native people” became a major commercial success [25] , especially in northern India and abroad, mainly in the UK.
Then Bobby played in the thriller Love in a Strange Scenario , another Abbas-Mastan film starring Akshay Khanna and Urvasi Sharma in . His role performance received mixed reviews. For example, Raja Sen from Rediff.com praised several scenes, noting: “Bobby got a meaningful role, and there are a couple of moments when he really affects the audience”, but described his character as “sensitive to an annoying hilt” [26] . This film was followed by two brief appearances in the role of himself in the films “ Om Shanti Om ” and “My Friend Bobby Deol” [27] .
After 2007
In 2008, Deol co-starred with Priyanka Chopra, Danny Denzongpa and Irfan Khan in the crime drama Chamku, playing the main character [K 3] , raised by the leader of the naxalites based in the interior of Bihar , after his family was brutally murdered. He is part of a secret government program conceived jointly by the Research and Analysis Division and the Intelligence Bureau for Political Murders, but falling in love with a kindergarten teacher, he decides to change his life. The director of the film, Kabir Kaushik, initially invited Bobby to play a major role in his debut film “Between Life and Death”, but, despite the script he liked, he refused [28] . Then Deol took part in the film “ Heroes ” as part of a strong acting ensemble, including Salman Khan , Prity Zinta, Sunny Deol and Mithun Chakraborty . Most of the filming took place in northern India, including Ladakh (in particular, Bangong Tso [29] ), Himachal Pradesh , Punjab and Delhi [30] . Although initially premiered on June 6, the film was released on October 24, the eve of Diwali. [31] Bobby's last role in 2008 was a minor character in the movie Close Friends , released under the banner of Dharma Productions . “Close Friends” - the first Bollywood film completely shot in Miami , eventually became the eighth among the highest-grossing films of the year in Hindi [32] .
In 2009, he played the role of an orphan who became an assassin and was mistakenly accused of murder, which he did not commit, in the movie "Loner", a remake of the Telugu film "Under the Sight" [33] . His next film is paired with Mugdha Godse was called "Cry! Pray! Scream! ”And was filmed in Mauritius [34] . In 2011, he starred in Crazy Family with his father and brother. Later, he played a businessman who was unable to remain faithful to his wife in the film “Thank you” in tandem with Sonam Kapoor . Both later appeared in the ensemble in the film-robbery " Players ", which failed at the box office [35] . “Crazy Family 2” also failed, the sequel to his 2011 film [36] . After a series of setbacks, the actor decided to take a break.
In 2017, he returned to the screens after a four-year break in the movie Poster Boys , along with his brother Sunny and director of the film Shrey Talpade, who is a remake of the film on Marathi, but failed at the box office [37] . Now he starred in the sequel "Crazy Family 3", and also agreed to continue the film "Race 2".
