Scientific activity

G.N. Gornostaev is the author of many books on entomology , which are widely known among both professionals and insect lovers. First of all, these are two handbooks on insects of Russia - “Insects of the USSR” (from the series “Handbooks-determinants of the geographer and traveler”) and “Insects” (from the series “Encyclopedia of Nature of Russia”). These handbooks contain information about the most common, widespread, important for the economy and protected species of insects. In field practices in entomology at Moscow State University and in a number of other educational institutions, Gornostaev's "Key to Detachments and Families of Insects" compiled extensively.

In the last years of his life, he worked on the problems of endangered insect species, was a member of the commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Endangered and Rare Species, a member of the expert group on the Red Book of Russia , and wrote a number of articles for several editions of the Red Book.
