Biography

Born in Paris , in the family of Alexandre Salomons, owner of a fabric store and his wife, Suzanne Caheen. The uncle of Jean-Pierre's mother was the famous actor Georges Berr. The boy’s father’s family once came from Holland; they were Jews. Jewish blood also flowed in the veins of the mother.

At sixteen, following the advice of his mother, he began to study dramatic art at the Paris Conservatory . As a professional actor, he debuted at age 21; his film debut took place a year later, in the film "Jean and la Lune."

The most important - and, in many respects, determining the future career for the actor was the role in Jean Cocteau in The Infernal Machine. After the release of the play, Omon's stage and cinematic career quickly went uphill; soon, however, World War II began . Jean-Pierre remained in France in 1942; then, due to Jewish descent, he was forced to flee from the Nazis. First, he moved to the then free part of the Vichy area, from there - to New York, and then to Hollywood. In Hollywood, his acting career found a second wind.

At first, Jean-Pierre worked with MGM ; after a while, however, he realized that he was no longer able to remain an indifferent observer and decided to return to France to help his compatriots. Having completed his work on The Cross of Lorraine, he joined the French liberation movement.

Rumble fought in North Africa; took part in the operation "Torch" in Tunisia. After that, together with the Allied forces, he went on a journey through Italy and France. During the war he was wounded twice; for the first time - on a mission, along with his brother. The second injury was much more serious - OMON’s jeep slipped into the river; his boss, the French general and commander of the first division of the French Liberation Movement, Diego Brosset, died.

For his courage, Jean-Pierre received the Legion of Honor and the Military Cross (Croix de Guerre). Later he resumed acting, playing a magician in the film " Lili " ("Lili") with Leslie Caron (Leslie Caron). For Americans, however, Omon was more remembered for the role of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in the 1947 painting “Song of Scheherazade”.

In the fifties, Jean-Pierre had the opportunity to act as a guest in the television show “What's My Line?”. In the sixties and seventies, he played in various Broadway productions - including Gigi. One of the last projects with his participation was “A Tale of Two Cities”, which was released in 1989. Two years later, the actor was awarded the commander's cross of the Order of Arts and Literature (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres); in 1992 he was awarded the Cesar Prize .

In Hollywood, Omon married Dominican actress Maria Montes , recognized Queen of the Technicolor films. Their marriage was a success, but did not last very long - the actress drowned on September 7, 1951. In 1956, Jean-Pierre married the Italian actress Marisa Pavan , the star of a number of films of the time.

He died in 2001 at the age of 90 from a heart attack. Omon's body is cremated, the ashes buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .
