Biography
White was born in St. Louis , Missouri . His father was a priest. After graduation, he played for the University of Kansas basketball team with which he reached the midwestern regional final in the NCAA tournament, where his team lost to the University of Texas at El Paso. After university, as part of the US national basketball team, he participated in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , where his team scored 9 victories and never lost. In the final, the US team beat Yugoslavia 65-50 and won gold medals. In 1967, White became part of the US national team champion of the Pan American Games in Winnipeg .
White was selected in the 1969 NBA Draft under a common 9 number by the Boston Celtics Club, which at that time had won its 11th league title in 13 years. However, before White arrived at the team's location, playing coach Bill Russell announced his retirement. The club began restructuring, and White, along with Dave Cowens and John Hawlichek , became one of the main players in the updated team. White was one of the first players to play all 82 regular season games for 5 consecutive seasons.
Together with the team, White won two league titles in 1974 and 1976, and in 1976 he was named the most valuable player in the final .
In 1979, White was traded to the Golden State Warriors, and later moved to the Kansas City Kings and in 1981 ended his playing career. On April 9, 1982, a banner with its number 10 was raised under the Boston Garden roof and assigned to it.
He died on January 16, 2018 [1] .
