On the bridge over the Bagmati River, 7 carriages of a train carrying at least 800 people (according to some estimates, from 1,000 to 3,000 [1] ) were overturned by hurricane wind into the water. Within five days, more than 200 bodies of the dead were found, several hundred people went missing. The lack of accurate data on the victims allows us to make various assumptions about the scale of the tragedy. Opinions are expressed that between 500 and 800 people died [2] , which gives reason to talk about this incident as the largest railway disaster of the 20th century. Various speculations about the causes of the tragedy are also expressed, including:
- Hurricane wind
- The flood that washed the train into the river
- An attempt to avoid a collision with a cow that entered the train tracks, which led to the capsizing of the train. [3]
