Description
The installed electric capacity of Surgutskaya GRES-2 is 5657.1 MW [2] , the installed heat capacity is 840 Gcal / h [4] . The state district power station operates on associated petroleum gas (associated product of oil production) and natural gas .
Thermal and electrical energy generation
On June 6, 2012, the Surgut State District Power Station-2 has generated 800 billion kWh since the start of the first power unit [1] . The station’s annual electricity production is characterized by stable annual growth, in 2012 it was generated 39.97 billion kWh, the maximum amount of electric energy in the entire history of its operation, in the previous year, generation amounted to 38.83 billion [1] [5] [6] . In 2007-2013, KIUM of Surgut State District Power Station-2 annually exceeded 81% [5] .
Surgut GRES-2 is one of the highly efficient thermal power plants in Russia :
- specific consumption of equivalent fuel on blocks No. 1-6 (steam-powered plants) - 306 grams per kW • h [7] ;
- specific consumption of equivalent fuel on blocks No. 7-8 (combined-cycle plants) - 225 grams per kWh;
- electricity consumption for own needs - less than 2.5% [7] .

History
The region began to develop rapidly in the mid -1960s - Surgut became one of the centers for oil and gas production . In subsequent years, active development of oil and gas fields was carried out, and by the mid -1970s, the former workers' settlement had grown to the size of a real city. In the 1980s, due to the rapid growth in oil and gas production in the Middle Ob region, a situation of energy shortages arose. There was a need to make a jump in electricity generation in the Tyumen region - to increase the share of electricity produced by five times. It was decided to build a powerful power station in the city of Surgut [12] .
The station project was put into operation in accordance with Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of November 15, 1979 No. 1000. The first block was commissioned on February 23, 1985 . Six major associated gas units were commissioned in 1985-1988.
According to the initial project, a total of 8 power units of 800 MW each were to be commissioned, after which the total capacity of the station was to be 6400 MW. [13] The design record power of the station was supposed to make it the most powerful thermal power station in the world, but, as of 2012 , the two remaining associated gas units were not commissioned and one of the three pipes of the state district power station was not used. [14] [15] It was launched in August 2014 after the power unit No. 6 was connected to it [16] . The pipes of the power plant have a height of 273 m.
The construction of the seventh and eighth power units of 400 MW of natural gas was carried out outside the original design of the station. [17] Power units using purified natural gas as fuel are built in separate buildings, use a combined cycle and have an electrical efficiency of about 51-58%. [18] The equipment was supplied by the American company General Electric , the work was carried out by the Turkish contractor GAMA . The completion and commissioning of two new power units was carried out in the first half of 2011 , after which the total installed capacity of the station was 5600 MW: [15] [18] the new power unit No. 7 was turned on and synchronized with the electric grid on March 30, 2011 ; [17] Block No. 8 was connected in June 2011 . [nineteen]
Until 2005, Surgutskaya GRES-2 was part of Tyumenenergo. In the course of the electric power industry reform, in 2005 the station became a part of the Fourth Generating Company of the Wholesale Electricity Market OJSC , and in 2011 the owner company changed its own name to E.ON Russia OJSC. [12]
In 2016, due to the re-marking of two new power units, the capacity of Surgutskaya GRES-2 officially increased by 60 MW [2] .
On December 27, 2017 at 08:05 the Surgut State District Power Station-2 was the first of the Russian thermal power plants to generate 1 trillion kWh of electricity from the moment it was launched [20] .
January 4, 2008 accident
On January 4, 2008, at about two hours local time, as a result of a partial collapse of the roof of the turbine compartment, the sixth power unit of the state district power station was turned off [21] . The situation was complicated by the fact that, firstly, the 5th power unit was already undergoing scheduled repairs, and, secondly, the negative temperature in the turbine power room could lead to shutdown of the remaining power units No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and full station stop.
An hour after the collapse of the roof as a result of exposure to cold, the load of power unit No. 4 decreased to 384 MW. The flow across the controlled transmission section of the Urals UES - Tyumen energy system has grown significantly and amounted to 1,482 MW (the maximum allowable - 1,550 MW). At 03:12, in order to compensate for the decrease in generation, as agreed with the Ural Regional Directorate, the dispatchers of the Tyumen RDU issued a command to increase the generation of the neighboring Nizhnevartovsk State District Power Plant by 520 MW to an installed capacity of 1,600 MW.
At 03:16, at the command of the dispatcher of the Ural Regional Directorate, the duty shift of the Tyumen RDU introduced a ban on work on generating and grid equipment.
At 03:17, Unit 4 shut down. The total load of the power plant decreased by 1,600 MW, and the overflow along the controlled section of the Urals UES - Tyumen energy system exceeded the maximum allowable and amounted to 1,913 MW (emergency permissible value - 2,000 MW).
This accident was localized by January 8 [22] . All this period of time, the Urengoy State District Power Station , the Iriklinsk State District Power Station , the Verkhnetagil State District Power Station and the Nizhnevartovsk State District Power Station operated in especially intense conditions [23] .
January 4, 2015 accident
January 4, 2015 (exactly seven years after the previous accident) at about nine in the morning local time, a fire occurred, the ignition area was about four hundred square meters. As a result of the fire, the roof collapsed with an area of about 1300 square meters above Unit 4. After the roof collapsed in the engine room, the temperature dropped to minus values. Technological protection falsely triggered by disabling the fifth power unit. The station reduced the load by 800 MW.
