Biography
The son of a peasant , Wolf, from childhood, carefully watched nature and learned to draw it. At 16, he went to Koblenz to work as an assistant lithographer , then worked in Frankfurt and Darmstadt , accompanying drawings by Edward Ruppel 's book “Birds of North-East Africa” and a number of works by Johann Jacob Kaup . Then, at the invitation of Herman Schlegel, Wolf worked in Leiden , and in 1848 he was invited to London to work in the British Museum , where he assisted David William Mitchell in illustrations for George Robert Gray 's fundamental work, “Species of Birds” ( 1844 - 1849 ). The next half century of his life, Wolf spent in England , collaborating, first of all, with such an outstanding bird watcher of his time as John Gould .
