The Great Patriotic War found Lieutenant Colonel I. S. Glebov as deputy chief of artillery of the 6th Rifle Corps, which was part of the South-Western Front , and since July 1941 he was chief of staff of the same corps. Since June 22, 1941, I. S. Glebov as part of the corps participated in the Defensive Operation in Western Ukraine , then in the Kiev Strategic Defensive Operation . In August 1941, the corps administration was disbanded, I.S. Glebov was sent to the reserve of the Supreme Command Headquarters , at the headquarters of the Southwestern Front he met I.Kh. Baghramyan, who asked the chief of staff of the front V.I. Tupikov to appoint Glebov as his assistant - Deputy Chief of the Operations Division of the Headquarters of the South-Western Front. [5] At this post, I. S. Glebov continued to participate in the Kiev operation. In September, the headquarters of the Southwestern Front was surrounded, most of the front and the 5th Army left the encirclement of the front headquarters. There were about a thousand people in the convoy, including eight hundred officers, followed by equipment — six armored vehicles, two field guns, and five quad anti-aircraft mounts. I. S. Glebov temporarily led the protection of the Military Council of the front. On September 20, 1941, the convoy stopped for a day in the area of the Dryukovschina hamlet, in the Shumeikovo grove, where it was discovered by the Germans. The Germans attacked the convoy from three sides, engaged tanks, staff officers repelled enemy attacks all day, all officers participated in the melee, including front commander MP Kirponos , several tanks were set on fire, the Germans could not stand it and retreated, but surrounded the rest of the group with a dense ring . In this battle, I. S. Glebov was wounded. At night, the officers who remained in service went on a breakthrough, the attack turned out to be sudden, many managed to break out. [5] [6] I. S. Glebov, among other officers, managed to get out of the encirclement and join the Soviet troops, he soon returned to his former position, then was appointed deputy chief of staff of the South-Western Front. Working at the headquarters of the Southwestern Front, I.S. Glebov participated in the Kharkov operation of 1941 , the Yelets operation , the Kharkov operation of 1942 .

On July 12, 1942, the Southwestern Front was disbanded; on August 25, 1942, I. S. Glebov was appointed chief of staff of the 4th Panzer Army . In the preceding battles, the army suffered heavy losses, only four tanks remained in its composition, on October 22, 1942 the 4th Panzer Army was transformed into the 65th Army , and I. S. Glebov was appointed its chief of staff. [7] P. I. Batov recalled:

Ivan Semenovich Glebov dragged the whole headquarters like an ox, but he did it skillfully, that is, so that each of his subordinates grew. At the age of 39, Colonel Glebov managed to graduate from two higher educational institutions - the Artillery Academy and the Academy of the General Staff. His extensive military knowledge, combined with his experience in high-ranking staffs, earned him general respect, despite the dryness of nature. Such a man was an invaluable find for the commander. One could calmly surrender to work in the troops, knowing that the decision made would be carried out creatively, with meticulous accuracy.

- Batov P.I. In campaigns and battles
